Teaching Recent Military Veterans
#9 in the CTE Improving Classroom Instruction Series for 2009-2010

MC 101 at Noon on Tuesday, November 17, 2009 (was Tuesday, Nov. 10)

The CSU Center for Teaching Excellence (CTE) announces the eighth in this year's series of workshops on improving instruction. This
workshop is intended primarily for all faculty members and teaching assistants, both full-time and part-time. The location will be MC 101,
and the time will be noon-1PM. The CTE will provide beverages, and we encourage you to bring your lunch and eat during the session.

This workshop will address the topic of teaching recent military veterans who are making the transition from a military environment
(often a combat environment) to a university setting.  The CTE is working close with Project SERV on the CSU campus to present this
workshop, and much of the presentation will be handled by the coordinator for Project SERV, Dr. John Schupp. We will also hear from
CSU faculty who have been working directly with the veterans currently in Project SERV.

Here are some of the topics we will address:
* Why the shift from combat to academia is particularly complex
* The importance of classroom environment
* The role of structure in teaching recent veterans
* Why it can be helpful view the professor as a Commanding Officer
* Using veterans as leaders in small group activities
* Test taking and stress

Stay tuned for an upcoming list of our Spring semester 2010 professional development workshops!
